I'm traveling to NYC today on Virgin. I keep on thinking about Richard Branson and the story I heard years ago that, in the early days of Virgin Records, the bands on the label were very psychedelic and avant garde and, in order to rescue the business, Branson sold LSD to keep the business afloat. This could be apocryphal, but I always believed it made sense myself. It's sure consistent with the type of bands he produced, such as the infinitely weird (but somehow delightful and very funny) Gong (see image above). I'm just glad none of his alleged former customers are flying the plane. So Branson is in the tradition of the Kennedy family, whose fortune was based on bootlegging.
The flight is pretty comfortable and I like the blue/red lighting and the video monitors and free internet. Also, the flight was inexpensive.
The guy next to me is pretty high. I can smell the alcohol. Good for him. I used to do the same thing when I was his age, partly out of a persistent fear of flying.
